History of Azabu

History of Azabu
Azabu landmarks

Azabu emerged as a renowned residential district in the 1630s and was chosen by the Shogun’s loyal samurai as the location for their private estates. As Tokyo expanded into a modern metropolis, its renown as a place of prestige grew with it.

During the Meiji era and Japan’s great opening to the world, it was in Azabu that the American Legation chose to first establish itself.

The rapid transformations that followed saw new urban train lines, entertainment venues, department stores and boutiques; many coming to Azabu before anywhere else.
