Results from research on working from home during the coronavirus crisis were released by Recruit Sumai Company, Ltd. on May 22, 2020. Here, we summarize the key takeaways.
Research Overview
The survey covered office workers or government employees, between the age of 20~64, living in Tokyo, Chiba, Saitama, Kanagawa, Ibaraki, Tochigi, Gunma, Yamanashi, and Nagano prefectures.
Total number of respondents: 1,390.
More remote workers, not all happy
47% of people surveyed said that they were working from home. This was an increase of 30 points when compared to research conducted in November 2019. 71% of remote workers stated that they began working from home as a result of COVID-19.
Survey respondents were asked about the negatives of working from home. The most common grievances were: “unplugging from work” (35%) and “no space to work at home” (33%). Among those who are married and living with a child under 6 years old, “No space to work while taking care of a child” and “No space to concentrate alone” were notable responses.
Desire to change residence
If the need to work from home continues, 48% of remote workers responded that they want to change the layout of their home and 24% said that want to move from the current residence.
