Tokyo Metro’s Namboku Line Extension to Connect Shirokane Takanawa Station and Shinagawa Station Set to Open in the 2030s

The “Shinagawa Subway” project will extend the Tokyo Metro Namboku Line from Shirokane-Takanawa Station in Tokyo’s Minato Ward to Shinagawa Station. The project aims to open in the mid-2030s and has an estimated construction cost of approximately 131 billion yen.

The route will run underground along “Meguro-dori” from Shirokane-Takanawa Station avoiding privately owned land. With the priority of reducing travel time to Shinagawa, which will serve as a major node for Haneda Airport and the Linear Central Shinkansen.

Current Tokyo Metro Namboku Line Route

With the anticipated opening of the Linear Central Shinkansen, Shinagawa Station is likely to become an increasingly important southern gateway to Tokyo, and the value of surrounding apartment buildings is expected to rise. Although there are no plans for a new station, Tokyo Metro’s calculations indicate that connecting to Shinagawa Station will likely improve the congestion rate on the Namboku Line between Meguro and Shirokane-Takanawa, and the Ginza Line between Shimbashi and Toranomon. The project may also affect the prices of properties in the direction of the Tokyu Meguro Line, which connects to the Namboku Line.
